This recession has impacted people’s lives in many ways.  Financial worries, job losses, foreclosures, repossessions, depletion of savings, etc., has taken its toll on many. No wonder people are finding it difficult to get a peaceful, uninterrupted night’s sleep.

Before the recession, insomnia was a big problem, with 30% of the population suffering from insomnia. Now, that number will increase because of the economic pressures facing so many families.  Unfortunately, the lack of adequate sleep can make matters worse because it affects our health.

Nevertheless, despite these worries and feelings of anxiety, we are still expected to function; looking for employment, preparing for job interviews, dealing with banks, social agencies, etc. All of these activities require clear thinking and concentration, which, without a quality night’s sleep, is difficult to do. Insomnia zaps our energy.

Furthermore, it doesn’t stop there. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep affects the immune system, thinking abilities and emotional health; and an irregular or fragmented sleep pattern has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Extended insomnia can also lead to other mood disorders such as depression.

According to economist, the recession is expected to hang around for a while longer, at least through the end of 2010. In the meantime, developing some good health habits to help cope with these stresses is what’s needed now and for the future.  Insomnia can be treated, and it doesn’t need to be with sleeping pills or sleep-aid drugs.  In fact, the risk of treating your insomnia with these medications is reason to look for alternatives.
