Why We Need Sleep

Sleep is a natural part of living.  However, as of today, there is no concrete consensus among scientists as to why we need sleep.   Nevertheless, they all agree that sleep is needed to recharge our minds and bodies, so we can function.   In fact, on average, we spend a total of 27 years of our lives  sleeping! So, it must be important.  One of the reasons why we need sleep is still such a mystery, is because during sleep our brains are still quite active, while our bodies are not.  Studies in this area ongoing.

Can We function Without Sleep?

The truth is, the average person can miss one night’s sleep, and then start the next day, normally.  However, as the day progresses, we become irritable and not able to think clearly.  Further, we all know that prolonged periods without sleep can lead to poor job performance, mistakes, accidents, diminished capacity and health problems.

The Benefits of Sleep

Although the amount of sleep needed varies from infants to adults, on thing is clear; after a quality sleep, we feel good, refreshed and rejuvenated.  In fact there are several theories as to why we get a boost from a good night’s sleep;

  • After a busy  and tiring day, sleep restores the body
  • Sleep increases our thinking and memory  capacities
  • Sleep helps us conserve energy
  • Sleep enhances our physical appearance
  • Sleep makes us less anxious and irritable

Insomnia

The condition of insomnia is the opposite of sleeping peacefully throughout the night.  Insomnia sufferers cannot  fall asleep, or stay sleep.   This problem can either be temporary or permanent, aka, a chronic .

Treating Insomnia

Temporary insomnia is often due to stress, worry or drinking too much caffeine.  Consequently, correcting these situations can improve a person’s sleeping habits.  There are many remedies and techniques available to help reduce stress and anxiety so that a peaceful night’s sleep is possible.

Most recently, a great deal of attention is being paid to treating insomnia with natural products and medicines; which are less harmful and non-addictive. These would include food that reduce stress and exercise activities.

Chronic insomnia

Chronic or permanent insomnia is more severe, and is most likely caused by an underlying cause or ailment.  Usually, a physician would be involved with treating chronic insomnia.  However, one common concern of treating severe cases of insomnia, is the prescribing of drugs to help induce sleep; which can be harmful and create dependency issues.

Based on this, it would be beneficial to consult a physician about natural alternatives to cure more serious cases of insomnia.
